Hydrogen-fueled cars for a greener future

New Delhi: They may look like regular cars, they run like regular cars, but they're not regular cars. So what makes them so special?

One thing is that you don't need to worry about pollution. The only thing that comes out of this cars exhaust is water for they all run on hydrogen.

Hydrogen is found everywhere. There are two ways to convert hydrogen into electrical energy — through fuel cells or through combustion.

In fuel-cell conversion, the hydrogen is combined with oxygen to produce water and electricity which runs the motor that turns the wheels. All that's released is water and heat.

During combustion, the cheaper of the two options, hydrogen is burned by engines much like cars run today. Some say it's even more powerful and efficient than the cars we drive today.

All of these are concept cars, but the General Motors Sequel claims to have 30 per cent more power than is generated in a typical SUV and it can go 0-100km is 9.3 seconds.

"The Honda is as comfortable as your car today and smooth. But the US is still the only place hydrogen is available. The hydrogen car is the car of the future," says Honda General Manager Marketing, Anita Sharma.

India is not far behind though. A hydrogen fueled three wheeler prototype by Mahindra predicts a strong future.

Mahindra & Mahindra Senior VP, Dr Arun Jaura says, "The hydrogen group of India predicts one million hydrogen fueled cars will be on the road by 2020."

With Mahindra's hydrogen three wheeler released recently and Tata planning to release a hydrogen fueled bus, we may not have to wait too long for greener pastures.
