Hyderabad: Even as investigations continue into the Mecca Masjid blast, police sources say that some of the unexploded bombs could have been intended for leaders who rushed to the spot of the first blast.
Serious questions are also being raised over the way the Hyderabad Police dealt with the bombs.
Andhra Home Minister Jana Reddy rushed to Mecca Masjid after Friday's blast. But Police sources said Reddy and three of his colleagues, may themselves have been the intended targets.
Police say the perpetrators followed a method tried and tested by Maoists.
The blast in the mosque could have been a diversionary one and at least one of the two bombs found in the vicinity could have been intended to kill the VIPs as they rushed to the spot. Thankfully they failed to blow up.
Police know the bombs were made with a mixture of RDX and TNT, and a cellphone was used to trigger it. They are suspecting a foreign hand in the attack.
"The device used and the clues indicate that this could not have been done locally," said Andhra Pradesh DGP M A Basith.
But the police's handling of the situation itself is now under scrutiny. Some visuals show the relaxed way in which the remaining bombs were disposed off. The bomb experts didn't even wear protective gear.
Moreover, the bombs were defused in populated areas, with several people watching just a few yards away.
The police's handling of the protests that erupted soon after the blast is also under fire. They had fired on the protestors killing five.
"We demand judicial inquiry into firing," said Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi.
As the police try to answer the critical question on who was behind the blast, there are more embarrassing questions posed to them – could they have reacted better, could they have avoided firing to control the crowd – questions, which they will now have to answer.
