They say that creativity is knowing how to hide your sources but filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma certainly doesn't subscribe to that view. So, here's some straight talk from the man with magic fingers.
CNN-IBN: A lot of people are saying that Darling is a horror film while others are saying that it's a supernatural thriller. What is the film actually about?
Ram Gopal Varma: It starts off as a romantic comedy and then becomes a thriller. Then it becomes a horror film and then again a comedy. And it ends up as an extremely emotional and serious relationship, which sounds gimmicky due to the way I am talking. That is because the protagonist played by Fardeen puts himself in a situation and his mental state and mind changes with the situations around him.
CNN-IBN: You have cast actors like Isha Deol and Fardeen Khan who are not really considered as accomplished actors. And then you are attempting something, which has serious mind games, do you think it will work at that level?
Ram Gopal Varma: I have the ability to communicate with my actors on what I want. I have this confidence or arrogance whatever you might wish to call but truly the actors have gone far beyond what was on script.
CNN-IBN: What's your take on plagiarism today when Bollywood is finally being sued?
Ram Gopal Varma: I believe I have copied Godfather in Sarkar in my view because if Godfather was not made Sarkar wouldn't have been made. But obviously when I set it in a different situation and time like in Mumbai politics the nature would be different. It's the same thing with Aag. I am not doing a remake of Sholay but it is an interpretation of the same thing and yet put in a different time period.
