Hyderabad: Controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen was roughed up by activists of an Islamist party, when she had gone to Hyderabad for a book release function.
And the culprits are not merely unapologetic. They say they are proud of their violent act.
Says MIM Party MLA, Akbaruddin, "I am proud of what we have done. In fact, I regret not being able to cause more harm to her."
Meanwhile, the state government is busy covering its tracks, making excuses for why it was not able to prevent the incident or provide more security cover to the author.
Says Home Minister, Jana Reddy, "We condemn the incident, but we were not informed of Taslima's arrival. If we knew, this incident could have been averted."
While the police rushed to Taslima's rescue, the media tried to save her from the violent mob. The police later escorted her safely on board a flight to Kolkata, where she's spent a good part of her years in exile from Bangladesh.
"The attack on me was done by a minority community. I believe in democracy and I enjoy the support, solidarity and sympathy of the majority, who also believe in democracy. Despite this, I am hopeful that I will be allowed to stay in the country, " says Taslima.
It is this very amnesty being provided to Taslima that is irking the MIM.
Says Akbaruddin, "The Indian Government should cancel her visa and this amnesty provided to her should be revoked."
The brash attitude of the MIM and brazen acts of violence have however sparked off a debate on whether this is the kind of treatment that should be meted out to someone in a country that proclaims itself to be secular and democratic.
