New Delhi: After Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, Akshay Kumar is the latest Bollywood star to jump on the IPL wagon. Kumar is now a brand partner with Delhi Daredevils and he insists that it is not for any commercial reasons but for the love of the city.
The Delhi IPL Team has signed on Akshay as its brand ambassador. Kumar's association with the team was revealed at a ceremony in New Delhi on Monday.
The ceremony also featured the team's Captain Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Asif. The Delhi Daredevils will begin their campaign against the Rajasthan Royals at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium on April 19.
Rupha Ramani: Are you excited about being a part of such a team?
Akshay Kumar: I am very excited because I was born in Delhi. It’s a great opportunity. I got very excited when I was offered this role to play a brand partner. I play the role of putting the spirit of the team together and that is what I am going to do.
Rupha Ramani: You see a lot of glamour coming to cricket. We have lot of stars coming in like Shah Rukh and Preity. Is that the reason that they roped you in as well?
Akshay Kumar: No, it is not because of that. I got a lot of offers earlier also from other teams. But I did not go for it because I belong to Delhi. I could identify myself with the Daredevil Delhi. So when I got this opportunity, I agreed. I am not doing it for any commercial sake or anything because it is all about sports.
Rupha Ramani: How special is cricket, the sport itself for you?
Akshay Kumar: I have always been attached to sports from my childhood. I played cricket at Red Fort and India Gate ground. Not only this, I am also attached to volleyball, swimming and a lot of other stuff and may be marshal art too.
Rupha Ramani: Did you ever think of owning a team yourself sometime?
Akshay Kumar: To be honest, I never thought about it. The idea never struck me.
Rupha Ramani: Do you see glamour and cricket at a very good quotient?
Akshay Kumar: Well we have always been together since the very beginning. It is not the first time. I have been a fan of cricket from day 1. In fact a lot of my earlier films consist of a lot of cricketers like an old film of mine, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Even now, I am doing a film about cricket. So it is not a new thing. It’s quite an old thing now.
