Mumbai: In Maharashtra the residence of one of the senior most Mumbai journalist and editor of Marathi newspaper Loksatta Kumar Ketkar was attacked on Thursday by members of a political outfit Shivsangram Sanghatan.
Reason? Ketkar had written an editorial criticizing the Maharashtra Government's decision to erect Rs 100 crore statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Arabian Sea.
Activists of Shivsangram Sanghatan pelted stones and tried to forcibly enter the house of Ketkar.
Talking about the incident Ketkar said, “At the cost of Rs 100 crore -150 crore building this statue when the state has so many other problems. This money can be used for other things in a better way etc."
The police reached the spot immediately and arrested seven protestors. The leader of the Shivsangram Sanghatana was out of town.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said, “Seven people have been arrested for this attack. All have been booked under non-bailable offence. We will ensure that others will also be arrested.”
In January 2008, Hindi news channel IBN 7's outdoor broadcast vans were vandalised by Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists for taking a strong stand against their north Indian tirade.
Last year, Star News office were vandalised and the employees attacked by a Hindu fundamentalist group.
Couple of years ago, Zee News office was targeted by NCP leader Chaggan Bhujbal's supporters for airing a political satire.
Not just Shiv Sena but smaller political outfits supported by parties like the NCP are now attacking journalists in Mumbai and Maharashtra. Though State Chief Minister has assured stern action against the attackers, only seven out of the 50 attackers were arrested by evening.
