I was offered bribe: Kumaraswamy

CNN-IBN

New Delhi Just when it seemed that the political crisis in Karnataka over the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) could finally be over, a fresh controversy erupted in the state assembly.

There was an uproar in Karnataka Assembly after Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy alleged that someone tried to bribe him in connection with the project.

The House was adjourned for 30 minutes after Congress MLAs created a din, asking Kumaraswamy to elaborate.

"Someone tried to bribe CM Kumaraswamy. But he said he is not saleable. We will discuss BMIC later in details," former Karnataka chief minister Dharam Singh said.

Earlier, both coalition partners in the government, the BJP and the JD(S), agreed to a compromise.

The BJP said it would back the JD(S) plan to take over excess land meant for the expressway.

The JD(S), on its part, agreed to defer the tabling of a Bill to call off the agreement with Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise (NICE), the company in charge of the project.

At its legislature party meeting on Monday, the BJP decided to support the JD(S) move to take over excess land from the project.

The government also seems to have softened its stance on the expressway, the country's first private road project.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy says there are no differences among the coalition partners.

"There is no rift with BJP. We are going to find a midway between BJP's stand and JD(S) stand," said Kumaraswamy.

The first stretch of the BMIC project or the Bangalore expressway was opened on Friday.

Earlier, just before the inauguration, the ruling JD(S) government told the NICE that it must not go ahead with the inauguration.

The government alleged that the Public Works Department (PWD) had sent a notice to NICE, saying that it would violate the framework agreement if the expressway was inaugurated without inspection and technical clearance of the road.

It also claimed that NICE should have sent a notice to the PWD first before opening the expressway. But NICE went ahead with the inauguration.
