Mumbai: An estimated 12,000 Indian Airlines ground staff went on an indefinite strike on Tuesday night, demanding a wage arrears and a review of their promotion.
The strike was not a sudden decision taken in their part. The members of the Airport Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) in fact wanted to go on strike May 17 but they delayed because they were waiting for an amicable solution.
They however, observed the strike after failure of talks between the management and employees union.
Says treasurer, ACEU, Vivek Rao, “In view of the pending merger we should be brought at par with the Air India employees.”
“We will observe the strike until the management accepts our demands,” adds chairman, ACEU, Rampalav
Chaos reigned supreme at Mumbai airport Tuesday night. Passengers say even the basic facilities of being picked up from the tarmac was not there.
“We had to wait for half an hour even after landing, “ one passenger says.
“We have not yet got your luggage back it is still in the air plane,” adds another passenger.
Though talks to resolve the dispute is on, air traffic certainly is going to be thrown out of gear across the country and international flights are also likely to be affected.
