I&B Min to institute awards for ent, news

New Delhi: The government may shy away from awarding the Bharat Ratna to deserving personnels on television, but the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is quick to propose awards for the television industry.

The Information & Broadcasting Ministry is planning to institute a media award for entertainment and news channels.

With 350 channels already on air and another 100 at various stages of launch, it's no surprise that the Television Awards have become an industry in itself.

The television fraternity will need to make space for another statuette as the great Indian Television Award is about to get a sarkari version.

The Information and Broadcasting ministry is mulling over a proposal to introduce National Television Awards on the lines of the National Film Awards. The awards will be given for entertainment and news, surely that would be simpler than conferring the Bharat Ratna.

Convenor Indian Television Awards, Shashi Ranjan said, "The Bharat Ratna has become a political gimmick, All the awards are loosing their sheen because the huge political interferences and influences each year."

Ranjan's statement is not entirely untrue, given that the government's National Film Awards has been mired in controversy, allegations of bias and jury playing playing favourites has invited court cases and injunctions.

One such case of favouritism was Raveena Tandon winning the Best Actress Award for her not-so-impressive performance in Daman Or more recently the row over blocking Amitabh Bachchan's nomination for his performance in Black which was attributed to the superstar not being on the right side of the political divide, there has always been enough grist for the mill.

Favouritism has been the only consistent winner in the govt-sponsored film awards, the ministry's proposed media awards will have to make fairness it's credo to remove doubts about their inherent bias. Or else people will say the government is looking for possible dependents in an independent media.
