New Delhi: The Delhi government has finally written to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), requesting them to hand over the building to the 30 blind students, who were illegally evicted from the house last month.

Two weeks ago, CNN-IBN reported about a group of blind students, who were evicted for illegally occupying a building in West Delhi for eight years- though for no fault of theirs. Following the CNN-IBN impact, the Delhi government has now started the process of giving their home back to them.

Louis Welfare Blind Association, Street No. 1, Virendra Nagar, West Delhi had been the address of the 30 blind men till a month ago. In 2002, they were given the abandoned building by the then local councilor as a goodwill gesture. But last month, they were evicted from the house, to make way for a parking lot.

"We had lots of trouble in the past one month, especially of the monsoon. As Delhi government has taken some initiative - we are hoping for the best, "said a blind student Satbir.

"We have already spoken to the in-charge of the Urban Shelter Improvement Board. Since the land belongs to the DDA, he is writing a letter to the DDA and requesting them that this should be allotted to these students. I definitely believe that the DDA will give the permission and we will immediately allot it to the NGO looking after them" said the Finance Minister of Delhi government AK Walia.

Finally some hope for these blind students. It may be a while before they can finally call this building their own. But the process has finally begun.
