The rule of carrying identity cards has already been enforced for those travelling in air-conditioned coaches so that only genuine passengers undertake the journey.

Railways makes ID proof mandatory for reserved tickets

The Railways have made identity proof mandatory for even those travelling in sleeper class and second class reserved coaches, economy class and first class.

It has been decided that one of the passengers booked to travel in AC Chair Car, 3 AC, 2 AC, 1 AC and executive classes on an ticket issued through computerised passenger reservation system of the railways will be required to produce any one of the nine prescribed proofs of identity during the journey. The passengers travelling on E-Tickets and Tatkal Tickets are already required to carry proof of identity during journey.

The move will help both railways as well as bonafide passengers in the following ways: Help in checking transfer of tickets and prevent activities of touts as now they will not be able to book reserved tickets in fictitious names and sell them on premium to passengers. It will also result in better availability of reserved accommodation to bonafide passengers. It will also increase security as bonafides of passengers are being verified in the train.
