IIM-A board clears 27 pc quota

Ahmedabad: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad on Friday approved a plan envisaging additional seats and faculty in order to expand in the next three years.

The decision comes two days after the Oversight Committee headed by Veerpappa Moily submitted its final report on implementing 27 per cent OBC quota in elite central institutions of learning.

Addressing mediapersons after the board meeting in Ahmedabad on Friday evening, Chairman of IIM-A Board of Governors, N R Narayanmurthy said "we have come out with a model that will satisfy central government and the Moily Committee which has told us to expand our capacity within three years".

"The central Government has asked us to prepare a detailed project report on how will IIM-A expand its facility to implement 27 per cent OBC reservation within the stipulated three-year's time," said Director of the Institute, Bakul Dholakia.

"We have prepared a report in which we have decided to expand our facilities by 10 per cent in the academic year 2007-08, 28 per cent in 2008-09 and will reach 54 per cent in

2009-10," he added.

The facilities include additional seats, infrastructure faculty and other resources, he said adding the report cleared by the board of governors of IIM-A will soon be presented to the Human Resource Development ministry.

Dholakia also said IIM-A will soon be appealing to Gujarat government to provide around 40 acres of land to build the new infrastructure.

They will also ask for one time grant of around Rs 80 crore from the central Government to build the necessary facilities.
