A first year M Tech student at the premier Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) hanged herself at the campus hostel here on Tuesday.
Police said Nerugu Manasa (23), a native of Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh, and wife of Srinivasa Manisala, had preferred to stay back after lunch and locked down the entire Sarayu Hostel Extension Annexure Building to commit suicide around 2 pm. “It was a three bedroom apartment where ten girls including Manasa were staying,” official sources said. A carpenter who had come to finish some pending work in the apartment returned after he found it locked from the inside. After a short while, he returned and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.
Police were informed and they rushed to the spot and recovered Manasa’s body. The IIT-M management contacted Manasa’s father Nerugu Rajesh Sham, also a resident of Karimnagar district, and her husband and conveyed the message about her death. Police sources said there was no suicide note found on the scene. The mobile phone and the laptop of the victim were seized for investigation.
