IIT students, teachers protest faculty quota

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Around 150 students and faculty members of Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi carried out a peaceful protest against the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry's recent order on implementing reservations for faculty appointment.

The HRD Ministry had directed the IITs to implement 15 per cent quota for Scheduled Castes, 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes and 27 per cent for Other Backward Castes in the faculty.

Protesting students and faculty argued that caste-based reservation will adversely effect one of the country's premier institutions.

They also added that IITs are merit based institutions and with severe deficit in faculty, reservations will affect students adversely...

The protest started after 2000 hrs IST and continued for an hour the students and faculty members took a candlelight march and walked around the IIT campus.
