New Delhi: Despite being a man down for more than an hour, Mohun Bagan edged out defending champions Dempo SC to register their first victory in the I-League this season at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa.
With this victory, the Green and Maroon have six points in their kitty from as many games while Dempo are on the same number of points as their opponents from four matches.
Dempo defender Valeriano Rebello was at the heart of the action. First it was the tackle against him which fetched Ananadavasan his second yellow of the day and got him out of the match just before the half hour mark. His first card was for pulling Mboyo Iyomi earlier in the game.
Second, it was against him that Mohun Bagan were awarded a penalty in the second half for pushing Indian national team skipper Bhaichung Bhutia.
Jose Ramirez Baretto stepped up to take the shot and coolly finished it to put his side ahead and which later turned out to be the only difference between the two sides.
Dempo created several opportunities with midfielder Climax Lawrence hitting the post off a Clifton Gonsalves cross from the left in the second session.
Ranti had a brilliant chance off a corner but his final shot was blocked. Dempo were denied by the alertness of goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee as he saved a Mboyo Iyomi header in the second half.
The Goan side dominated the proceedings but failed to score which proved to be costly at the end of the day. Mohun Bagan defender Deepak Mondal was awarded the Man of the Match award.
It’s certainly been a great victory for Bagan to beat the champions in their own den despite being in bad form recently. They would however miss Baretto for the next match due to double yellow cards.
Dempo need to pull their socks and get their act together before facing Churchill Brothers on the 5th of the next month.
Final Score: 0-1
Goalscorer Bagan: Jose Baretto (50th pen)
