Bangalore/ Hyderabad: With the two major IT cities in the country on the expansion curve, authorities are moving towards regularising illegal constructions.
Significant areas in Bangalore and Hyderabad have been affected by the ongoing regularisation drive. Greater Bangalore for that matter is fast becoming bitter Bangalore.
Residents of areas recently brought under the city corporation are up in arms because they are being asked to pay hefty betterment charges and fresh taxes under a new law called Sakrama.
Sakrama aims at constructions, which do not adhere to the city's stringent building rules.
"We were shocked to hear when they said that whatever you have paid to CMCs is nullified after spending my fathers money in constructing this house, now we are suddenly being told that to regularise your living here or to stay in this house should be after spending or so,” says a resident, K V Girish Kumar.
Residents have been given time till December 14 to apply for regularisation. Reports say 20 per cent of Bangaloreans may have to pay up.
However, the Brihan Bangalore Mahanagara Palike claims it is not as bad as it sounds.
"The people who own a smaller plot are liable only to pay a lesser amount when compared to people who have a bigger plot,” says Special Commssioner (Adminstration), BS Ramaprasad.
In Hyderabad on the other hand, the regularisation drive has brought back a wide smile on the faces of builders. Nearly 40,000 buildings will benefit from the scheme.
“There are too many illegal constructions, everything will be regularised except the buildings on government land,” says Municipal Administration Minister, AP, Koneru Ranga Rao.
Bangaloreans are already demanding scrapping of the scheme citing major loopholes. Citizens of Hyderabad though are yet to react, with the AP cabinet having cleared the proposal just a week back.
