Mumbai: Thirty-six police constables were suspended after a sting operation exposed the nexus between the policemen and builders. The sting operations, conducted by a social activist, showed 15 policemen accepting bribe to allow illegal constructions in Mumbai's Kurla area. The expose comes a week after an illegal building collapsed in Thane killing 74 people.
While the Mumbai Police has initiated an inquiry against the accused policemen, the Maharashtra government has also taken a note of the expose. "This is the first time that action has been taken against so many policemen. If more senior police officials are involved, action will be taken against them," said Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh also assured action against those found guilty saying, "This is shameful for the police department. All 36 have been suspended. All of them are constables, no officers. The inquiry is on. If anyone found guilty, will be punished."
