I'm terrible to be around when not playing: Beckham

Mark McKay, CNN

David Beckham's stint with LA Galaxy so far has been frustrating because of an ankle injury. Last week, though, Beckham finally scored his first goal for his new team. CNN's Mark McKay sat down with Beckham a few days after scoring that goal to talk about his new life in America.

Mark McKay: David, this week you said, "I have scored a lot of important and big goals in my career, and this ranks among them. How big was that free kick goal against DC United?

David Beckham: It was big in the sense that everybody was sort of getting impatient with my ankle, impatient with the fact that I wasn't playing, and I was happy for myself that I could actually get on the field and start playing again. Scoring the goal was an added bonus for myself and my fans. So I'm just happy to be back playing and happy to be around the lads on the field and I hope that it continues.

Mark McKay: You have got the ankle that is healing now. What about when you were sitting on the bench, how badly did you want to be out there?

David Beckham: I think I'm a terrible person to be around when not playing soccer. When I'm injured or when I'm out of the team, you can ask my wife, she knows exactly how I am, and how passionate I am about being on the field. And when I'm not on the field then it affects me on and off the pitch. Yes, it has been frustrating to be in the treatment room everyday, because I hate the treatment room.

Mark McKay: David, it has been five weeks since you have been introduced to southern California. Has all the attention drawn to you surprised you anyhow?

David Beckham: It has, because to a certain extent we all know that soccer is not the biggest sport in America, and there are so many other great sports. But the attention that I have received has been great in a way, because it lifts the profile of the MLS and soccer in the state. So I think that's been the great thing about the attention I have received since I arrived.

Mark McKay: Has your family adjusted to the life after five weeks in the US?

David Beckham: They are loving it. I think it is a great place to bring up kids. It's a great place for my family to live, because Victoria's happy, and the three boys are are really happy—they couldn't be any happier at the moment. They have not been so many different places before—they have been down to the beach once or twice a week. So to have that quality in their lives, it makes them very happy.

Mark McKay: What do you miss from England?

David Beckham: I miss a lot of things. I miss my family that is back there, my parents, my grandparents, my sisters. But, like I said, it's about experiencing different things, different cultures and way of lives and what better way of life than living in the States and bringing your kids up here for a while. But of course, there are many places and many things I miss about England.
