Impact: Abhishek to undergo surgery in Delhi

Nikita Mishra, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A month ago, after CNN-IBN aired a story highlighting the plight of 20-year-old Abhishek Bansal who suffers from a rare intestinal disorder, doctors at Delhi's Gangaram Hospital have offered to carry out a first-of-its-kind transplant in India that could cure him.

“Whatever amount was received was thanks to CNN-IBN’s support. I request that the Government also helps me,” Abhishek said.

Abhishek is slowly taking steps towards a healthy life and a possible cure from a rare disorder which affects one in 10 million people. He has been diagnosed with Visceral Myopathy, a condition that leaves the intestines dysfunctional with slim chances of survival.

When CNN-IBN first met Abhishek a month ago, his family was considering a complex surgery to be carried out at the University of Pittsburg, in the US, which would cost them Rs 10 crore.

But after Abhishek’s story was aired, Dr Soin from Gangaram Hospital in Delhi offered to carry out the transplant for Rs 50 lakh, which is 5 per cent of the cost abroad.

Abhishek's family flew down to Delhi on September 12 and doctors in the Capital have chalked out his treatment plan.

“The only treatment for this is an intestine transplant. So we are trying to build him for a small intestine transplant,” Dr Soin said.

But Abhishek's family is clouded with obvious fears. Experts say that so far only 100 transplants for this condition have been carried out worldwide with a success rate of 60-70 per cent. Yet, Abhishek remains positive.

“I am hopeful. I am hoping that I get help from all quarters. Once I am successfully treated then I hope no other person who suffers from his disorder will go through the pain that I did. I have complete faith in my doctors,” Abhishek said.
