Impact: Cemetery gets makeover

CNN-IBN

The following impact took place beacuse of a Citizen Journalist from Pune Shamit Ghosh.

Pune: A Pune cemetary has got a clean up thanks to the citizen journalist's initiative and CNN-IBN.

On May 2 CNN-IBN reported about a cemetery in Koregaon Park, one of Pune's most expensive areas, where graves were reused due to lack of space.

To reuse the graves previously buried and half decomposed bodies were left outside the grave instead of a reburial.

This was an invitation to dogs, black magic performers and it also was a health hazard.

Immediately after the story was aired on television and CNN-IBN contacted the Pune Municipal Commisisoner Nitin Kareer, PMC workers swung into action.

Two days later the cemetary looked clean with even the compound walls sporting a new look.

The question that lies ahead is whether the Pune Municipal Corporation will make sure there is no repeat of such irresponsible mismanagement of human remains.

However, the response and quick action taken by the PMC must be applauded.

Issues such as these should be dealt with immediately instead of just ignoring them and it will ultimately benefit the citizens.
