Impact: Minister promises action

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Following an expose by CNN-IBN's special investigation team about tiger poaching in Melghat tiger reserve on the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border, the Maharashtra Forest Minister, Babanrao Pachpute has promised action against the erring.

“We take this report seriously. We will start a new campaign. When you kill a man section 302 is imposed. However, we will bring a new law in Maharashtra, which will state that when you kill a tiger similar section will be imposed on killing a tiger,” says Maharashtra Forest Minister, Babanrao Pachpute.

According to the investigation, steel traps, used by the poachers to trap tigers, were found with alarming regularity in the region. And experts say they see it as indication that locals have joined hands with the poachers.

“Locals who kill tigers for Rs 500 are tribals. The Centre has a number of policies for the tribals, and we will go back to the Centre to request them to implement these policies as soon as possible so the tribals can get back their land. Existing forest laws need to be re looked at,” Pachpute says.
