New Delhi: Over a month ago, a class eight student Dhanjita Das had told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that her school in a remote Assam village was falling apart.
Now the dilapidated school has got Rs 40 lakh from the Prime Minister to rebuild and expand the complex.
Dhanjita had met the PM a month ago on CNN-IBN’s Children's Day show and at the end of it she handed over a note to Manmohan Singh describing the condition of her school.
The PM – a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam – allotted the money for the school from his MP local area development fund.
Elated at the news, Dhanjita spoke to CNN-IBN.
“I am extremely happy. I had not expected this since I had just given a written request. But nevertheless I am extremely grateful to the Prime Minister,” Dhanjita said.
“In my letter I had told him that the condition of my school is very bad and that it becomes even more difficult when it rains. I had requested him to grant us Rs 40 lakh. My school friends and teacher are very happy. We will now be able to get a better building with a laboratory and a library. When I gave him the letter the Prime Minister told me that he is also an Assamese and promised to help me,” she added.
