New Delhi: Police have made arrests after CNN-IBN exposed a baby selling racket in Delhi. They've also shut the placement agency that brought poor women from villages and forced them to bear babies which were later sold like commodities in a secret market.
CNN-IBN's expose of this so-called placement agency in the capital has now forced authorities to take action. The Delhi police says one of the victim girl, Sukhmui, who had been forced to deliver a baby three weeks back, will be taken to her native village to identify the culprits.
DCP Manish Agarwal said, “The girl initially subjected to rape in Jharkhand and she does not know the name of the person who inflicted rape on her. That is impedence to start in the investigation. We are hopeful that with the help of the girl being taken to her native place she will be able to identify the person and that will make the entire investigation that much easier.
Meanwhile the Central Welfare Committee has blamed the Delhi Police for mishandling the case. The CWC says Delhi police violated rules by sending the two babies to Nari Niketan instead of Nirmal Chhaya, a children's home.
The Child Welfare committee has ordered the police to seal the agency premises, and confiscate all documents, pending an enquiry into CNN-IBN's investigation.
“I have already instructed the SHO to take the girl, her 20-days old baby need immediate care and protection. Then, the decision of their restoration, rehabilitation will be looked into after considering various facts, various circumstances,” said Bharti Sharma, of Child Welfare Committee.
But Delhi still has over 1,200 unregistered placement agencies. And unless the government cracks down quickly on these agencies, the baby factories of the capital will continue to carry on their vile trade.
