Mumbai: Faced by embarrassing questions over slain Anti-Terrorist Squad chief Hemant Karkare's missing bulletproof vest, the Maharashtra government has now ordered a full-fledged probe to find out the truth behind the jacket.
Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil confirmed to CNN-IBN that a probe has been initiated.
Reacting to the probe order, Karkare's brother Shirish Karkare told CNN-IBN, "I wonder why it took Maharashtra government one year to act on such a serious matter. Hope the probe finds out the truth and takes it to its logical conclusion."
CNN-IBN has exclusive access to the inquest panchnama and other documents which shockingly have no mention of the bulletproof vest. Even though credible sources claim that when Karkare's body was brought to the JJ Hospital, the bulletproof vest was very much there.
The mystery of the missing jacket has deepened further. The big question now facing the investigative team is how did the crucial vest, which could expose corruption in the procurement of substandard bulletproof vests, go missing from the hospital and who is responsible for it?
