Impact: Reality cheque for UP govt

Tejaswi Rathore, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The CNN-IBN report on the plight of farmers in drought-hit Bundelkhand has caused a stir in election-bound Uttar Pradesh. After reports of farmer's suicide in Bundelkhand, the political community has stirred into action.

The Opposition is blaming the Government for ignoring farmers and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is demanding a report on the matter from the Uttar Pradesh government.

"We at the Centre want the Uttar Pradesh government to give us a report on what is the factual position in the state. Only after we get that factual report can I comment on the issue," said Pawar.

The BJP says it is shameful that farmers are taking their lives under the Samajwadi Party's rule.

Says BJP President Rajnath Singh, "It's a matter of shame for the Uttar Pradesh government."

But the Samajwadi Party remains defiant. Dismissing it all as a political stunt, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav maintains there have been no farmer suicides in UP.

"Till now in Uttar Pradesh, not even a single farmer has died of hunger. The people who have said this are people who have nothing better to talk about, so have started this propaganda against the Samajwadi Party. The farmers have never been as happy in the state of Uttar Pradesh as they are today," says he.

Even as the issue becomes a political football in Uttar Pradesh, the barren fields and starving families of Bundelkhand await earnest help.
