London: A chain of restaurants in the UK called Gandhi's Restaurant is using the Mahatma's name to sell non-vegetarian food and alcohol. Ironically, these are the two things the Mahatma was against.
"He wasn't a drinker and wasn't a non-vegetarian eater. We respect his wishes. We opened business in European country, we cater for the Europeans and that is what they expect you to serve here. Otherwise we will not be doing any business," said the owner of Gandhi's restaurant, Zalal Uddin.
"The customers used to come and tell me that how wise it is of me to name the place Gandhi's Restaurant - after the great man. Everybody knows who he was and they really appreciated it and it was an instant hit," he added.
Bangladeshi immigrants own the chain and the first restaurant opened 27 years back when Richard Attenborough's Gandhi was released. Regulars of the restaurants include the who's who of British politics including Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
With three outlets in London itself the cash registers are ringing for the chain.
"I knew he was a vegetarian. I guess, he didn't drink alcohol. Probably not for me, I am more likely to be engaged in passive resistance than to become a vegetarian or stop drinking alcohol," said a regular at Gandhi's Restaurant, Tim.
However, the idea hasn't gone down very well with Gandhi's followers. They believe that if the man himself were alive he would have found this immoral.
