Thiruvanthapuram /Kozhikode: Kozhikode is a town in Kerala known for its brand of halwa, biryani and honest autorickshaw drivers.
And so it doesn’t come as a surprise when autorickshaw drivers in the town go that extra mile ferrying passengers by installing telephones in their three-wheelers.
Says an autorickshaw driver, Naushad, “For the last six months, we had been thinking of getting a phone fitted in the auto. Finally this has worked. I am sure it is going to help us get that extra income as much as it helps the passenger.”
The town now has close to 10 autorickshaws fitted with phones for public use. The modification costs Rs 2,500.
But with the number of travelers using the phone growing by the day, it is an investment recovered fast.
“This is will be of great help to all of us. Whenever you need to locate a place while traveling, you can call up someone to find out. You don't have to stop at a phone booth and waste time,” says a passenger, Mansoor.
The scheme piloted by a private telecom company has proved a hit. More and more auto drivers are applying for phone connections.
So next time you are in Kozhikode, all you need to do to make a phone call is call that friendly auto driver.
