Kannur: Thirty-five-year-old Sowmini is inconsolable. Her husband 42-year-old Surendran was hacked to death allegedly by CPI-M workers on Wednesday. His fault – his brothers are all RSS workers.
“They came with swords and knifes and knocked at our door sometime around midnight. As we did not open, they broke open the door, locked up me and children in another room and then hacked my husband to death. After they ran away, I called for my neighbours to help, but nobody came to our aid,” Sowmini said.
Kannur has been a killing field for the last three decades. More than 200 workers belonging to the RSS and CPI-M have been killed in political murders, which started back in 1968, when RSS men attacked beedi workers belonging to the CPM.
Shaju, a resident of Kannur recalled, “There was a short gap of peace in the area. But now we are living in fear again.”
“Since the well-planned killings have started, we are scared to even walk on the roads. State government should put and end to this for ever,” Shaju added.
The state government says it will do its best to put and end to the killings, but it’s a well known fact that unless the CPI-M and the state government allows the police to act independently, Kannur will remain to be Kerala's killing fields.
