In MP, autopsy held under a tree

Bhopal: In the 60th year of India's independence, at a time of global deals and rising India, there’s a darker side to the country where the poor state of medical facilities in certain parts deprive many of dignity, even in death.

In MP's Shahdol, a murder victim's postmortem was carried out in the open and after CNN-IBN managed to get the disturbing visuals, the state's Health Minister admitted it’s just one of many such cases.

Twenty-five-year old Munna's body was recovered from a well in Gardha Tola village in MP. Munna's father carried his son's body to the nearest primary health centre on a bicycle.

Once there, the body was laid out in the open and the post-mortem was conducted.

However, Shahdol's Chief Medical Officer S Tripathi denied the incident. "I'm not aware of any such post-mortem being conducted in the open. And this does not happen at all. Post-mortems are done in the post-mortem room only," said Tripathi.

Though Tripathi denied the incident, State Health Minister Ajay Bishnoi when - confronted with the visuals - was candid enough to admit such incidents are not limited to only Shahdol, they were rampant across the state.

"This is a fact of our state. In many places there are no post-mortem rooms. We have allocated funds for the same in the present budget but construction takes time,” he said.
