Indecisive Govt dithers over key poll issues

New Delhi: To do or not to do, the Union Cabinet seems to be suffering from an indecision problem. Elections are around the corner but it seems the Government cannot decide on several key issues like whether to legalise homosexuality or what to serve in government schools to overcome malnutrition.

On homosexuality, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss is pitted against Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

And as the Government argues on whether or not to legalise it, the community feels that homosexuality is slowly finding social acceptance in the country.

Gay activist Ashok Rao Kavi said, “We need to get rid of this obsession that homosexuals sodomise for sex.”

On the issue of supplementary nutrition, Renuka Choudhary's Women and Child Development Ministry has been insisting on serving ready-to-eat food while a vociferous majority in the Cabinet wants hot cooked meals.

The issue could not be resolved earlier by the secretaries and now even the Cabinet has failed to arrive at a consensus. After a heated 45-minute debate the matter was referred to a Group of Ministers.

Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said, “Regarding the provision of hot cooked meals in all the Anganwadi Centres under ICDS, the Government has decided to constitute a Group of Ministers which will give its recommendations after consultations with the state governments."

This might be the last Parliament session under the UPA leadership. Perhaps these are issues, which are of no interest to the Government's managers.
