India and China can transform Asia: PM

New Delhi: ‘India and China are good for Asia and for the world’ was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s message as he wound up his Beijing visit.

The PM who met Chinese President Hu Jintao, called for new ties of friendship between the two Asian giants.

The Prime Minister had a meeting at Academics of Social Sciences on Tuesday.

He called for a cooperative relationship between India and China.

Singh said India and China were not just competitors but also partners and together could transform Asia and the world.

“This involves India and China working together closely,” said Singh.

If the applause is any indicator, the Chinese elite agreed, China now wants to see India join it at the UN high table.

Together, the Prime Minister said they could tackle common threats including terrorism, energy insecurity and climate change.

“We can do much more to jointly develop clean and energy efficient technologies through collaborative research and development,” said Singh.

One irritant that refuses to go away is the disputed border. And an informal round of talks took place on Tuesday with nothing much to show for it.

“The boundary between us is peaceful, we are both determined to keep it so,” says Singh.

But as the border talks inch along, at least the two militaries will aim for peace.

So maybe the New Year will see fewer incursions and less aggressive patrolling.
