India answers Pakistan's 26/11 queries

New Delhi: The ball is now back in Pakistan's court with India handing over the response to its list of 30 questions on the Mumbai terror attacks.

India also replied to the questions in two annexure, including how Anti Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare was killed.

Pakistan sent 30 questions earlier in March on the Mumbai attack and on Friday India gave 32 answers which included more than 400 pages in all including CDs, intercepted voice recordings and voice logs.

"Home Ministry has prepared the answers to all the 30 questions along with supporting materials which are relevant," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.

The material had the lone terrorist captured alive Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab's confessional statement and his identity card details, DNA profiles of the 10 terrorists and their photographs, copies of digital notebooks recovered from the terrorists and also copies of memos found on them.

The replies also include transcripts of conversations between the terrorists and their Pakistani handlers and also transcript of observations made by a man identified by Kasab as his handler.

"It is a very comprehensive document. It answers every question so anyone who is serious about investigating the origins of Mumbai attacks will find that there is enough material to take the investigation forward," said Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.

Within an hour Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon personally handed over the document to Pakistan's High Commissioner Shahid Malik.

"It is part of the process and it will be helpful to us in carrying forward the investigations that are underway in Pakistan," claimed Malik.

Chidambaram reflecting satisfaction at the conclusion of the exercise but also voicing doubts widely held in India

"If Pakistan is serious about investigating the origins of the horrific crimes committed in Mumbai, these answers a solid basis. We expect Pakistan to take the investigation forward quickly," hoped Chidambaram.

With the ball back in Islamabad's court, it is India's turn to wait and watch.
