United Nations: Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed on Tuesday said that India is all set to file charges against the conspirators of Mumbai terror attacks - all of whom are allegedly based in Pakistan.
"India will act to safeguard and protect its people from such heinous attacks however long and difficult that task may be," Ahamed said at the United Nations N Security Council (UNSC) in New York.
Ahamed's statement at the 15-member UNSC, which was debating on 'Threats to international peace and security cause by terrorists', shows India has taken the first step in building an international case against the Mumbai attack conspirators.
Ahamed said the terrorist trail from Mumbai was clear, implying there was enough evidence leading back to Pakistan and the extremist groups hiding there.
He called on the UNSC to act against oraganistaions behind the Mumbai terror strike.
"The Jamaat-ud-Dawa and other such organisations need to be proscribed internationally and effective sanctions imposed against them," Ahamed told the 15-member Security Council.
JuD is the public name of Lashkar-e-Toiba, which was banned in 2002. India and the US have said that the LeT and its leaders were involved in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
During the course of a debate at the UNSC, Ahamed also asserted that the country, from where the terrorist attack originated and was planned, should take immediate steps to stop their operations.
He also called for India's 12-year-old comprehensive convention on terrorism to be adopted
Ahamed warned that India had acted with restraint so far and reminded the Security Council that the UN Charter recognised the right of self-defence.
India, he said, would take whatever action it deemed fit to protect its people.
It would help if the international community acted decisively and in a coordinated manner to prevent further acts of terror.
