Bonn: Viswanathan Anand will resume his quest to retain the world championship in Bonn later on Wednesday night.
Anand needs just half a point to defend the title he won last year in Mexico.
His opponent Vladimir Kramnik of Russia put a spanner in the works just when everything was going according to plan by winning Game 11 of the championship.
Anand's Diwali celebrations were put on hold as the Russian won the 10th game of the series. his first win of the contest so far.
"I am not sure what exactly i did wrong. I mean the position is tricky. In fact he has out maneuvered me so that when my bishop was supposed to be on E6, it was still on G4. But I don't know whether the arrow came earlier or just about that," Anand says about Game 10.
The win for Kramnik came with white pieces within just 29 moves but Anand needs to draw only one of his next two games to get to 6.5 points and with it complete the mission.
While Anand needs only a draw to win the championship, Kramnik's game seems to have picked up in the last few matches and the contest has taken on a new life.
"Better for me not to think about it. Both have the chance. Mine still less than per cent," says Kramnik.
Back home in India, chess fans are crossing their fingers and those who have watched Anand closely believe there will be no more surprises.
"He has in fact played much better chess than Kramnik throughout the match and he should continue with it. One game really doesn't matter so much," Grandmaster Sandeepan Chanda says.
