India, Bangladesh sign deal to fight terror

New Delhi: Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Monday and signed a slew of agreements on fighting terror.

The Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan for Hasina had a far greater significance than any other in the recent past with India applauding her determination to ensure that Bangladesh does not remain the second front of Islamic terror in South Asia.

Sources told CNN IBN that Bangladesh is committed to exchanging intelligence on terrorism and related matters at the level of Prime Ministers Offices.

Backing the commitment are three agreements on countering terrorism with both sides agreeing to extradite criminals convicted in either country, paving the way for wanted ULFA leaders and jehadi terrorists to be tried in India in the future.

An Agreement on transfer of sentenced persons being held in either country's jails and an umbrella agreement on combating international terrorism, organised crime and drugs trafficking have also been signed.

The commitment was further underscored by Hasina at the banquet hosted by Singh where she said, "Bangladesh is committed to eliminate all forms of terrorism from inside its territory. Bangladesh shall not allow its territory to be used for launching terrorist activities against any country in the neighbourhood."

"Now India understands Bangladesh's concerns and they understand ours," said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Clearly it's a new Bangladesh that India is dealing with. Unlike previous regimes in Dhaka that sponsored terrorists, Hasina's government is cracking down on terrorists and is not willing to allow any anti-India activities on its soil.
