Chennai: India started their defense of the Asia Cup hockey tournament with a win over Asian games silver medalists China.
A decent crowd was present at Chennai's Mayor Radhakrishna stadium and the home team went on attack mode from the start.
The Indian forwards though, failed to convert any of the chances early on.
They were disallowed a penalty corner goal in the first half but former captain Dilip Tirkey struck the winner of an indirect penalty corner in the 44th minute.
India thus avenged their loss at the Asian games. They will next take on Sri Lanka on Saturday.
