India bids final farewell to Jyoti Basu

Kolkata: India will bid final farewell to former West Bengal chief minister and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) patriarch Jyoti Basu on Tuesday.

CPI-M State Secretary Biman Bose accompanied the body from the Peace Haven mortuary at 0730 hrs IST on Tuesday morning with thousands of party workers and common people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of Basu.

Many were seen shouting 'Comrade Jyoti Basu lal salaam (red salute)' slogans praising Basu.

The veteran Marxist will receive a Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute before his body is donated to a hospital for medical research.

Basu body will be donated to the SSKM Hospital for medical research, in accordance with his last wishes.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will among those attending the ceremony.

Basu's body, draped in the Tricolour, will be in a gun carriage around Kolkata, with six Army officers marching alongside.

The carriage will go via Park Street and AJC Bose road to the party's headquarters on Alimuddin Street.

It will remain at the party headquarters from 0800 hrs IST to 0900 hrs IST to allow party members to pay homage.

At 0900 hrs IST, the carriage will proceed to the state Assembly, Writers' Building via AJC Bose Road, Lenin Sarani, Esplanade East and Governors Place East.

A makeshift platform has been erected at the Writers' Building gates where Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti will pay tributes to Basu.

Ministers, bureaucrats as well as the general public will have a chance to pay homage at the state Assembly between 1000 hrs IST and 1500 hrs IST.

At 1530 hrs IST, the Indian Army will perform the 21-gun salute at Mohurgunj next to Victoria Memorial.

Finally at 1600 hrs IST, Basu's son Chandan will hand over the body to SSKM Hospital authorities.
