New Delhi: The 10th Osian's Cinefan Film Festival saw as many five Pakistan-based filmmakers showcase their works in the Capital with Nandita Das starrer Ramchand Pakistani being one of the most popular films.
However, the picture back home is bleak. Pakistan's film industry is crippled with the lack of infrastructure, funds and a few cinema halls to screen the films.
Pakistani filmmaker, Omar Ali, struggled to make his full length feature film, Zibakhana, but unlike most, he was able to complete his project.
"If you go to the studios in Lahore you will find no work. People are just sitting idle. People are ashamed of the kind of movies we make and they should be," Ali says.
Interestingly, these filmmakers from across the border feel that the revival of Pakistan's film industry won't be possible without some help from the Indian side.
Director Ramchand Pakistani, Mehreen Jabbar says, "I think the lifting of the ban on Indian movies will help because it will help revive our theaters and the cinema."
Omar Ali adds, "It is absolutely crucial. We need the gates to open."
With both countries screening movies from the other side and joint productions in the pipeline, Pakistan's film industry just might get the facelift that it desperately needs.
