New Delhi: The Republic Day celebrations went off smoothly in Delhi despite warnings of a suicide bomb attack.
With over 15,000 Delhi Police and Army personnel were deployed across the capital, tight security arrangements were in place after the arrest of a Lashkar terrorist a few days ago.
There may have been calls for boycott by the Naxals, but the celebrations were colourful in Bhubaneswar as well with Governor Rameshwar Thakur taking the salute. One CRPF jawan however, lost his life battling Naxals in Malkangiri district.
In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the Chief Minister took the salute for the first time instead of the Governor. The Orissa Governor has been holding additional charge of Andhra Pradesh.
In Kashmir valley, the Republic Day was peaceful too, barring routine small arms firing on the border.
There was no untoward incident in Assam as well, despite boycott calls by the ULFA and a recent surge in violence.
In all, the 58th anniversary of the formation of the Republic was not only a peaceful but also a glorious one.
