New Delhi: India and China will hold another round of border talks on Wednesday. But the remarks of Chinese Ambassador Sun Yuxi in which he said, “China claims all of Arunachal Pradesh as its territory,” was an ill-timed one.
The remark forced the Prime Minister to rule out territorial concessions on Tawang for Chinese president Hu Jintao. And then just prior to Hu's visit, India had proposed a meeting of the special representatives. China turned down the proposal.
But Hu's visit did mend political fences. Both leaders agreed to complete at an early date the task of finalising an appropriate framework for a final package settlement covering all sectors of the India-China boundary.
A statement, which signalled China, was not putting the boundary issue on the backburner.
And now both special representatives come to the table with directions to act with "greater vigour and innovativeness". The sentiment re-inforced when the PM met Premier Wen Jiabao over the weekend on the sidelines of a multilateral summit in the Philippines.
“Both PM Wen and I agreed that the boundary issue should move forward and the process of the discussion on the issue be accelerated,” Manmohan Singh said.
And the boundary dispute will once again figure prominently when the PM visits China in the latter half of this year.
