India does not need to import wheat: Pawar

New Delhi: Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday, said that India had no need to import wheat this year.

"I am confident of procuring 16-17 million tons of wheat this year... As of now I don't see a need for import of wheat," Pawar told PTI.

India’s target is 15 million tonnes. Last year’s imports of wheat were to the tune of 1.8 million tonnes. The Government went in for imports last year after the procurement target of 15 million fell short by 3.9 million tonnes.

Pawar said that current procurement stood at 8.6 million tonnes or 60 per cent of the target.

He said that says that if the Government were able to procure food-grains from two or three wheat-producing states then there would be enough for the whole year.

“If these two-three states also will succeed, I will be able to procure, practically fulfill the entire requirement of the year; plus I can keep quite a good quantity for next year as reserve,” said Pawar.

Pawar also said that the wheat prices in India are stable as compared to other countries.
