Indian eves bag World Boxing gold

New Delhi: On a day the entire nation is agonised about the way Team India capitulated in the Durban ODI, there is reason to cheer for as well.

The Indian women boxers put in a sterling performance to come up triumphant in the World Boxing Championships in New Delhi.

M C Marykom became the toast of the nation by completing a hat-trick of world titles and helping India lift the team trophy.

The Indian contingent picked up four golds, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals on Thursday.

M C Marykom in the 46kg category, L Sarita Devi in the 52kg category, Jenny R L in 63kg category and K C Lekha in the 75kg category won gold.

Marykom became the first women boxer to win the world titles three years in a row after the championships were introduced in USA in 2001.

With their total haul, the Indian contingent have also won the team championship.

Jenny R Lalranliani won India's first gold when she defeated Klara Svensson of Sweden in the 63kg category of the Women's World Boxing Championships on Thursday.

Jenny won the gold when the referee stopped the contest after the points' gap between her and the Swede became too much at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium.

For the record, Jenny won the first round 11:4 points and ran up a huge 23:8 lead in the second round when the referee stepped.

In the other results, Ri Jong Hyang of North Korea defeated Yesica Bopp of Aregentia 14:10 in the 48 kg category to win the gold.

In the 50 kg category, Hasibe Erkoc of Turkey defeated Siyuan Li of China 18:12 to finish first, while Ochigava Sof'Ya of Russia beat Karolina Michalczuk of Poland 21:2 in the 54kg class.

Katif Taylor Ireland won the gold in the 60kg category when she defeated Anabella Farias of Argentina 31:14 points.

Russia, last year's champions, finished second with three gold and three silver medals, followed by North Korea with a tally of 2-0-1. Canada, the runners-up in 2005 edition, were fourth with one gold and two bronze.
