India faces water crisis as temperature rises

London: A major new report says that the worst case scenario of a six degree rise in temperatures projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this century is likely to come true.
The Global Carbon Project report has found a 29 per cent increase in global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel between 2000 and 2008 points to six degree rise in temperatures this century.
Professor Corinne Le Quéré of the University of East Anglia and the British Antarctic Survey who headed the study says spoke to CNN-IBN on the survey.
"Our report has analysed the trends in CO2 emissions and the carbon cycle in the past two decades and we see very fast and accelerating trends in emissions and the path of emissions we are on is the path towards six degrees of global warming," said Corinne Le Quéré.
The consequences for India could be devastating in this scenario
"For a country like India it means severe water stress in the dry season, extreme precipitation events in the wet season, associated decrease in crop productivity, it means also associated migrants, people having to be relocated because the climatic conditions in their environment are not good enough, including from neighbouring countries having to deal with sea level rise," added Le Quéré.
With temperature rise becoming a reality there is more pressure for a deal in Copenhagen. But the perceived urgency may still not mean money on the table.
