New Delhi: Unassuming, humourous, observant and honest, that's critically acclaimed Iranian filmmaker, Majid Majidi for you.
He was in the Capital on Friday to talk about his tie up with UTV's Spot Boy Motion Pictures which will result in a film by Majidi, extensively shot in India with an Indian cast.
For now, it's a well guarded project said to be titled, Kashmir Afloat.
"For the last couple of years, I have been looking to make a film in India and I have received a lot of offers and when UTV's Spot Boy approached me, I thought it was an ideal company to work with because I felt that they would support a filmmaker like myself," says Majidi.
Majidi is known for making films which focus on human emotions and dilemmas like Color of Paradise, Baran and the Oscar nominated, Children of Heaven.
And when it comes to Indian cinema, Majidi compliments Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal and Mira Nair, but feels otherwise about commercial Indian films.
"I remember the film Sangam with Raj Kapoor. I liked it very much. Back then, even the commercial side of Indian cinema was a bit softer and had a bit more humanity to it. Now, there is less of that. It seems to me a cinema without identity," says he.
And if given a choice to work with an Indian actor, who would he choose?
"I'm sorry," is all he says laughing.
