New Delhi: Undeterred by the Kabul embassy bombing, India has announced $ 450 million more in aid to Afghanistan.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, who’s in India for a two-day state visit, that the terror attack was targeted at Indo-Afghan friendship.
“The attack on our embassy in Kabul on July 7 has tragically shown that it was an attack on the friendship between Indian and Afghanistan,” the PM said.
Karzai had pointed his finger at Pakistan's ISI hours after the Indian Embassy in Kabul was attacked. But on Monday, he chose to be slightly more circumspect.
“India and Afghanistan are facing challenges of terrorism and cold-blooded, brutal, murderous activities,” Karzai said.
Behind closed doors Manmohan Singh and Karzai are reported to have exchanged notes on how the two sides can improve their cooperation in fighting terrorism from Pakistan.
It is believed that top of the agenda was upgrading security for the Indian mission in Kabul and the consulates in Jalalabad, Herat and Kandahar.
Intelligence reports say the Jalalabad consulate is the most vulnerable, Kandahar being the next.
Manmohan Singh also announced a new $ 450 million-assistance package to Afghanistan, bringing India's total aid to more than a billion dollars. But at the end of the day no answers were forthcoming about how to deal with Pakistan-inspired terror.
Ironically, Pakistan’s President General Pervez Musharraf would have reinforced India and Afghanistan's collective security dilemma when he warned against conspiracies to weaken the ISI. He said ISI is and would remain Pakistan's first line of defence.
