New Delhi: The Indo-Pak foreign secretary level talks have proved to be a non-starter.
At least, that is what can be inferred from the messages coming from Islamabad. Pakistan's foreign minister Qureshi has indicated that his government will not be acting against Hafeez Saeed anytime soon.
Ahead of foreign secretary level talks in New York next week, a verbal missile from Pakistan's Foreign Minister Qureshi has put Indian side on alert.
"I don't expect any major breakthroughs in talks with India," the Pakistani foreign minister has said.
That will be interpreted in South Block as a hint that in the days ahead, no action will be taken against Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed, nor will a trial of the other 26/11 conspirators begin.
Delhi refused to react officially to Pakistan virtually torpedoe-ing the talks even before they had begun.
But off the record, South Block sources said:
- India would listen to what Pakistan had to say in New York.
- Islamabad must act against the 26/11 and dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism on its soil.
- Resumption of the bilateral dialogue would therefore depend on Pakistan moving to address Indian concerns.
The talks are clearly not heading towards any fruitful conclusion.
