Panipat: The train that was suppose to be a symbol of friendship between India and Pakistan met with a disastrous fate on Sunday night.
"We were sleeping. Suddenly there was a blast. All the windows and doors were shut and it got really suffocating inside. Then somebody opened a window. I got burnt all over," says an old lady who was one of the 600 odd passengers traveling on the Samjhauta Express to Pakistan on Sunday.
Close to midnight, two improvised explosive devices went off as the train passed through Deewana village, 10 kilometers from Panipat.
By the time the train finally stopped at Siwah village, 10 minutes after the blast took place, over 60 passengers had already died of burns and suffocation, some charred beyond recognition and at least 50 were injured - some seriously.
Explosive devices had been placed in each coach of the five-bogey train, but the remaining three did not go off. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad admitted to a security lapse.
"We don't have the facilities to check every bag that goes on to a train," he said.
This is the first time that Pakistanis have been targetted in a terrorist attack on Indian soil, shattering all hopes that the 'train of hope' stood for.
