India-Pak agree to begin trade across LoC

New Delhi: After a long delay, India and Pakistan on Monday finally agreed to initiate trade across the Line of Control (LoC).

The trade will begin from the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawlakot checkpoints, and the lists of items to be traded on both sides have already been exchanged.

A formal announcement will be made when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Zardari meet in the US.

India had hoped that trade could begin from October 2 — just in time for Eid — but Pakistan is yet to send a delegation of businesses chambers from Muzaffarabad for talks

Indian diplomats suspect the delay reveals Pakistan's reluctance about Confidence Building Measures (CBM).

Earlier in September, a team from the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government had inspected the facilities on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalkot routes.
