India, Pak come together on creative platform

Mumbai: After opening gates to each other's films, India and Pakistan could well now make history again by joining hands for a joint production that will bring producers, actors and technicians from both countries together.

Not surprisingly, the idea of this film has been developed by the Bhatts, who've been active in building cinematic ties with Pakistan over the years by holding premieres and taking part in film festivals across the border.

"It is a co-production in the true sense. There is a Pakistani producer who has tied up with a foreign company and taken the expertise of the Bhatts. It’s a proper co-production where we are exchanging actors and technicians," Mukesh Bhatt said.

According to reports, the film will be directed by Shoaib Mansoor of Khuda Ke Liye fame and will be shot across locations in India, Pakistan and Europe.

With an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore, the yet-untitled film which will reportedly star Emraan Hashmi sounds suspiciously like yet another cross-border love story on the lines of Veer Zaara and Gaddar, but the producers beg to differ.

"It’s not a cross border love story. It’s a love story. See I want to put an end to this — we Indians and they Pakistani. I feel that is bad. We are one so let it be just a love story and not a love story of a Pakistani and an Indian," Mukesh clarified. “We don’t want to highlight the separate identities of India and Pakistan in our film. The whole purpose is to bring everybody on one platform and give it a new colour.”

Though the element of an Indo-Pak co-production may create an initial curiosity around the film, the success of the film will depend on the final product that team India-Pakistan deliver at the theatres. But surely this joint-production is yet another significant step in bringing the countries together on a non-political platform.
