Dossier not enough, Pak seeks more proof

CNN-IBN

More than a month after India officially gave Pakistan a dossier pointing out how Pakistani state actors and Pakistani citizens were involved in the Mumbai terror strikes, Pakistan has now come out with its own response. It says Indian evidence is not good enough. Former director general, Pakistan intelligence bureau, Masood Sharif Khattak gave his view on the situation.

CNN-IBN: Is Pakistan deliberately trying to evade the answers to all the question being put to it by India?

Masood Sharif Khattak: No I don't agree with that because obviously India has conducted its own inquiry based on the dossier provided by the Indian Government. And I’m sure they must’ve gone into the details. But if you recollect when the incident actually happened, Pakistan had offered India a joint investigation. If that had been agreed to by the Indian govt may be the present scenario wouldn’t have cropped up.

CNN-IBN: Is this a step back from even the things the Pak govt had admitted to - like the nationality of Kasab for instance?

Masood Sharif Khattak:It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with Pak. There’s a lot been said on Kasab from both sides which I won’t dwell on. As far as the confessional statement of Kasab is concerned, even a confessional statement in an ordinary crime usually doesn’t stand up in a court of law.

CNN-IBN: What about the Credibility of Pakistan government? Doesn’t that get affected if after all this while it is asking for more information. Is this not a simple play for more time?

Masood Sharif Khattak:It can’t happen that one dossier has to be accepted in totality. In my opinion Indian govt should have taken the joint investigation offer.

CNN-IBN: So is this the Dead end point? Unless there is a joint investigation there will be no cooperation?

Masood Sharif Khattak:I would not like to believe that there is a dead end, but I’m certain that the Mumbai terror incident can’t be solved to the satisfaction of both sides by the exchange of one dossier and one reply. The positive thing for the Indian govt will be to consider all the aspects which it doesn’t agree with and come back to the Pak govt with that.

CNN-IBN: Isn’t it about Pakistan's credibility vis-a-vis the international community, not just India?

Masood Sharif Khattak:No, if you recollect the secretary general of the Interpol was also in Indian and after that he came to Pakistan. He said he wasn’t satisfied with the proof provided to him by India. So, I don’t think Pakistan’s credibility is at stake.
